Heat emergency lands on Conshy just in time for the fireworks weekend

Welcome to July, where the forecast reads like a dare. Highs are expected to climb near or above 100 degrees for three days in a row across the Philadelphia region, and the city has already declared a heat emergency ahead of the Fourth. The National Weather Service told WHYY this may be the hottest heat event we've seen in a while, which is a phrase I would rather not read while packing a picnic blanket.

For families in Conshohocken, the practical stuff matters more than the superlatives. Cooling centers, hydration, checking on older neighbors, and rescheduling the mid-afternoon soccer scrimmage all belong on the list. If you have outdoor plans tied to the borough fireworks on July 3 or the Soap Box Derby on the morning of July 4, plan around the sun, not through it. Bring more water than you think you need, then bring more.

On the commute side, SEPTA Regional Rail is dealing with major disruptions Wednesday after an overnight train derailment in North Philadelphia, per 6abc. If your family relies on Regional Rail this week, build in a cushion or reroute entirely.

Angelo's keeps Conshohocken's bread-baking legacy going

If you have been in Conshy long enough to remember when nearly every block smelled like fresh loaves at 5 a.m., there is a small piece of good news. Angelo's Pizzeria has been quietly working to preserve the borough's bread-baking legacy, expanding wholesale bread production out of Conshohocken, per MONTCO.Today.

It is the kind of story that sneaks up on you. A pizza shop that got famous for its sandwiches ends up carrying the torch for an entire town's baking history. Not a bad summer read while the sourdough proofs.

Your July 3 and July 4 game plan for families

The borough's annual fireworks display is scheduled for Thursday, July 3 at approximately 9:15 p.m. Sutcliffe Park is closed to the public during the show for safety, but the display is designed to be visible from most vantage points across town, per the Borough of Conshohocken. Colonial School District has also posted a reminder about the July 3 show.

Friday morning belongs to the 75th annual Conshohocken Soap Box Derby, rolling down Fayette Street starting at 8:30 a.m., with racer registration at 7 a.m. Free to watch, glorious to cheer at, and a genuine slice of small-town Americana.

Looking to layer on more? Norristown has a 1 p.m. parade and evening fireworks at Elmwood Park, Upper Merion hosts a carnival and fireworks at Heuser Park, and Valley Forge National Historical Park is running a full 250th anniversary weekend from July 3 through July 5, with all park-hosted events free.

A bit of Conshy history heading into the Semiquincentennial

With the country marking 250 years, the Conshohocken Historical Society has been dusting off its own archive. According to a recent piece shared through MoreThanTheCurve, the borough held a 1975 Bicentennial parade tied to General Lafayette's retreat through Conshohocken.

Fifty years later, the retreat is still one of the more interesting historical footnotes in this stretch of the Schuylkill. Worth a mention at the picnic table this weekend, if the conversation drifts.
