Lead Story

Nor'easter clears the Conshy weekend calendar

· · 2 min read

Well, it was a nice idea. The weekend plans, I mean. A nor'easter has settled over the region, and the Conshohocken calendar is folding like a two-dollar umbrella.

The first casualty is this morning's farmers' market. The notice posted with the weekly MoreThanTheCurve market preview reads, "The market is canceled for September 26th due to the weather forecast for rain and wind." Short, clear, no wiggle room. If your Saturday ritual involves a coffee in one hand, a toddler in the other, and a vague plan to buy vegetables, that ritual moves to your kitchen today.

The second casualty stings a little more. Flocco's had planned its 100th anniversary celebration for Sunday, September 27. That party is now postponed to a future date because of the forecast, per MoreThanTheCurve. After a hundred years, a few more weeks for a dry afternoon seems like a fair trade, I guess. No new date has been announced, so keep an eye out.

So what exactly are we hunkering down for? According to 6abc's AccuWeather forecast, the storm "will move inland midday Sunday after bringing several rounds of coastal flooding and strong winds to the area."

Unpack that sentence and the "coastal flooding" part is mostly a Jersey Shore problem. Floodwaters filled two Atlantic County motels, and nine people and a dog were rescued. The "strong winds" part is closer to home. Neighbors in Delaware County woke up Saturday to downed trees, fallen wires, and power outages, with some homes and cars taking significant damage. Delco is not Conshy, but it is not exactly far away either.

The ripples reach the city too. The annual Puerto Rican Day Parade will not take place on Sunday along the Ben Franklin Parkway and has been changed to an indoor event.

One more cancellation, though nobody has tied this one to the rain. The Borough says the Zoning Hearing Board meeting set for Monday, September 28, at 6:30 p.m. at Borough Hall has been cancelled. Now my biases are obvious, but between that and everything above, this looks like a weekend built for board games and a very long nap.

Local News

The Conshohocken Cab takes its last lap

·

Some public services exit with fanfare. The Conshohocken Cab is exiting with a shrug. MoreThanTheCurve put it about as bluntly as local news gets: "The Conshohocken Cab will take its final lonely ride around Conshohocken at the end of 2026."

Lonely is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The same report calls it a "little-used service," which is the polite way of saying the back seat saw more empty air than passengers.

Let me flip the frame for a second, though. Every local transit idea is a bet that people will change their habits, and sometimes the bet does not pay. That tells you something about the service. It tells you much less about whether the need behind it went away. If you know a neighbor who does not drive, whether that means an older relative or a teenager with places to be, the more useful question for Borough leaders is what fills the gap after December. The cab itself was never really the point.

Meanwhile, the Borough picked up a win on the other side of the line. At the September 21 meeting of the Plymouth Township Zoning Hearing Board, the board voted five to zero to grant the Borough of Conshohocken zoning relief for a new public works facility in Plymouth Township, according to MoreThanTheCurve. So yes, the folks who plow our streets may soon clock in at a Plymouth address. Municipal borders are weird, and I love them for it.

A swim school on the way and a bread rack with a past

·

Two small stories this week, one looking forward and one looking way back. Both are the kind of thing that makes a town feel like a town.

Looking forward first. Aqua Tots Swim School is preparing to open at the Plymouth Square Shopping Center in Conshohocken, and it is now hiring. A swim school with "Tots" right there in the name is going to get the attention of every parent who has ever watched a four-year-old treat the shallow end like the open ocean. Nothing about an opening date or class schedules has been announced in what we have seen, so for now the news is simply that the lights are coming on and they need people. If you know someone looking for work, the listing is worth a look.

Now the look back. The Studio at Hidden River is offering for sale a bread cooling rack from the Conshohocken Italian Bakery, per MoreThanTheCurve.

Think about that for a second. Somewhere in that metal is the memory of a lot of warm loaves sitting around waiting to be carried home and torn into before anyone reached the table. Well, yes, it is a rack. It is also a very Conshy piece of furniture, and I suspect whoever buys it will spend the rest of their life explaining it to dinner guests.

A new swim school and an old bread rack in the same week. One teaches the next generation to float, the other reminds us what the last generation had for dinner. Not bad for a rainy weekend.

Safety

Storm weekend safety and a few road notes

·

The fun part of a nor'easter is the excuse to stay in. The less fun part is what it leaves behind. Neighbors in Delaware County woke up Saturday to downed trees and fallen wires, so a few reminders for families.

Treat any downed wire as live. Keep kids and dogs well away from it, and report it rather than poking at it with a stick (I know, the stick is tempting). Puddles near fallen lines are off limits too.

If you head for the Schuylkill River Trail once the rain clears, go slow and watch for debris. A single tree was enough to close the trail in the Whitemarsh area back on September 14, and that was without a nor'easter's help.

On the roads, Friday's morning commute got a rough start when a car fire on I-76 near the Conshohocken curve caused major delays. And a reminder for school-run parents in Plymouth Township, the Belvoir Road shutdown began in mid-September and is expected to continue for eight months. Residents raised concerns about traffic as school started, so build in a few extra minutes.
